Harry Markowitz was an American economist renowned for fundamentally changing the way investments are analyzed and managed through his pioneering work in modern portfolio theory.

He was honored with the 1989 John von Neumann Theory Prize for his groundbreaking contributions in portfolio theory, mathematical programming, and simulation.
The following year, he received the 1990 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for establishing the theory of portfolio choice, which quantifies how risk, return, correlation, and diversification influence investment portfolio outcomes.
Markowitz served as a professor of finance at the Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
